Prof. Naubahar SHARIF Received HK$2 Million Funding to Conduct a Mental Health Project Targeting Hong Kong’s Ethnic Minority Communities

Prof. Naubahar SHARIF, Professor and Acting Head of the Division of Public Policy (PPOL), has successfully obtained HK$2 million worth of funding from the HKSAR Government' s Mental Health Initiatives Funding Scheme for the 24-month project entitled “Preparing and Deploying Ethnic Minority Lay Leaders to Promote Mental Well-Being Among Hong Kong's Major Ethnic Minority Communities”.

This project will be among the first to address mental health challenges faced by Hong Kong's ethnic minority communities, as well as pioneer the "lay-leader" model in promoting awareness regarding mental health issues among often-overlooked ethnic minorities in Hong Kong.

HKUST Develops New Multifunctional Hydrogel for Odor and Microbial Control in Hong Kong’s Drainage and Flushing Systems

Developed by a research team led by Prof. Yeung King-Lun from the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and the Division of Environment and Sustainability at HKUST, the MalOdor-Control (MOC) hydrogel is proven effective in treating odor problems at drainage locations, including manholes, nullah, intercepts, water channels, and rivers in Hong Kong. It worked by killing odor-causing microbes and preventing emissions of odorous gases. Meanwhile, the new hydrogel formula AntiMicrobial hydroGel (AMGel) disinfects flush water of bacteria and viruses, including the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron strain as well.

TEMG4950I Special Project “Urban Retrofitting Strategies for Arup”

The final presentation of TEMG4950I “Urban Retrofitting Strategies for Arup” was successfully held on 5 May 2022. It marks the end of another challenging student-consulting project offered by Dual Degree Program in Technology & Management (T&M-DDP).  Although more than half of the class do not have a degree in Civil Engineering, students learned a new domain of retrofitting for decarbonization and energy-efficiency, and other Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set up by the United Nations.

Dual Degree Program in Technology & Management (T&M-DDP) High School Student Dinner was held on 10 June 2022 to gather over 40 prospective high school students and parents. Program directors, faulty advisors, alumni, staff and current students joined the event to mingle and share about program design, learning experience, opportunities and career prospects.

Prof. Jianzhen YU, Chair Professor from Division of Environment and Sustainability, received the Asian Aerosol Research Assembly (AARA) Fellow award at the 12th Asian Aerosol Conference in Taipei. The AARA has established AARA Fellows to recognize individuals with outstanding service to the AARA and significant contributions to the field aerosol science and technology and in Asian regions for more than 10 years.

IPO Teaching Excellence Award 2020/21

Prof. Arthur LAU, Program Director of Environmental Management and Technology (EVMT), Undergraduate and Taught Postgraduate Programs Coordinator of the Division of Environment & Sustainability (ENVR), is awarded the IPO Teaching Excellence Award 2020/21. Prof. Arthur LAU teaches various undergraduate and postgraduate courses. As a result of the high quality delivered, the SUST1000 teaching team led by him received the Common Core Teaching Excellence Award 2020. He also coordinates and consolidates with 10 different corporates in supporting the 10 Capstone Projects for the EVMT final year students. Students give very positive feedbacks to Prof. Arthur LAU's courses and particularly appreciate the interactive class design and how approachable and helpful he is.

IPO Best Research Award 2021-22

The IPO Best Research Award 2021/22 was contested by highly productive students of IPO, who have in all instances excelled in academic performance. For the PhD category, the first prize was awarded to Dr. Jinjian LI (PhD in Environmental Science, Policy and Management program, Class of 2021) in light of her numerous publications and her outstanding innovative work on an online Aerosol Nitrogen Analyzer. The runner-up prize was given to Mr. Tilman Leo HOHENBERGER (PhD in Atmospheric Environmental Science program, Year 5) for his substantial contribution to develop new data analysis and integration techniques to measure urban air quality. For the MPhil category, Ms Veronica Qin Ting LI was awarded the first prize to honor her policy research on using personal data and digital applications to improve information management on COVID-19.

Graduate of Dual Degree Program in Technology & Management has been selected to join World Economic Forum (WEF) Prestigious Young Global Leaders Program

Swan LU, a 2011 graduate of Dual Degree Program in Technology & Management (T&M-DDP), is now the Principal at Zurich Insurance Group’s Global Ventures. She has been selected by the World Economic Forum (WEF) to join its prestigious Young Global Leaders program. The WEF created the Forum of Young Global Leaders back in 2004. Its aim is to help the world meet increasingly complex and interdependent problems by creating a diverse community of the world’s next generation of leaders from all walks of life and from every region of the world. And then help these young people become more responsible, strategic and impactful leaders.

Shanshan WANG from Dual Degree Program in Technology & Management (T&M-DDP, Class of 2012) received a Certificate of Merit at the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) Young Engineer of the Year Award 2022 in recognition of her effort and dedication to the engineering profession. The award honours the outstanding young engineers who have made commendable engineering achievements and valuable contributions to the continuous development of Hong Kong.

Nathan XU of Individualized Interdisciplinary Program Won Second Place in IEEE SusTech 2022 Student Poster Contest

Nathan Nan XU, PhD Candidate from Individualized Interdisciplinary Program, won the Second Place together with his team at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Technologies for Sustainability (SusTech) Conference Student Poster Contest held on 21 April 2022. A total of eleven posters were presented online. The research topic they presented was “Smart Tracking Tray System for A Smart and Sustainable Wet Lab Community”, which is part of the HKUST Sustainable Smart Campus (SSC) As Living Lab project outcome.

Dual Degree Program in Technology & Management (T&M-DDP) Class of 2021 graduate, Log G CHENG and T&M-DDP Year 5 student, Laurence NG were awarded with the championship in AI & FinTech theme at Hong Kong Techathon 2022. Apart from cash prize HK$10,000, they are also admitted directly to a number of tech-related business competitions and have opened up many funding opportunities, the team is very excited to bring the business to the next stage.

Year 5 student Mickey YAU from Dual Degree Program in Technology & Management (T&M-DDP) recently received HKUST Stephen Kam-chuen Cheong Outstanding Student Award (SKCC Award) 2022. SKCC Award is an annual award aiming to recognize and honor excellent students who contribute to the HKUST, lead and inspire others, and make a positive impact on the campus and beyond. The recipient is chosen based on their outstanding merits, qualities, achievements and/ or contributions in support of the University's mission and core values.

Faculty Get-together Hiking Event

To promote exchange among faculty members and well-being at the Interdisciplinary Programs Office, a faculty get-together hiking event was held on 21 May 2022 from Quarry Bay to Repulse Bay. IPO staff, faculty and their family members followed the Quarry Bay to Repulse Bay hiking route via Tai Tam Reservoir of Tai Tam Country Park (Quarry Bay Extension). During the two-hour hike, IPO faculty and staff were able to mingle with each other and appreciate the natural scenery along the trail. They passed by the beautiful scenery of Tai Tam Reservoir, Tai Tam Waterworks Heritage Trail and Repulse Bay Beach.
